This piece embodies a melding of cultures and eras. The concept stems from the traditional wooden Latvian dowry chests, which were often quirkily decorated and are venerated in folk songs. The artwork on the chest represents the blessing of the Latvian sun goddess and the freedom of the Aussie bush.
The metal has been hand cut and forged from sheet brass. The style of the artwork was inspired by Australian artist Margaret Preston’s lino prints. The sun and eucalypt leaves are hand drawn originals cut into linoleum, printed onto the metal and etched.
